Aaaahhh, TJ.

Thank you for sharing the TV Smith story.

I discovered punk, through The Clash, in about 1981, when I was 16. Punk changed my life, and TV Smith was a huge part of that. He was the most articulate spokesman of the punk era. His voice was the finest of the genre, his lyrics have never left me, his band's first album was the highest point of the musical genre that helped give me those parts of myself that I am comfortable with. The Adverts never lost their vitality for me.

Roll around 2007. TV Smith was an icon of my youth, his last 20-plus years of work never released here in Australia. A dear friend of mine told me TV was playing in Sydney (3 hours drive from my home in Canberra). I thought it would be cool to hear the old songs from The Man's mouth - indulge in a bit of nostalgia, tolerate his newer material for the sake of the memory.

The date rolled around. I heard snippets of TV's newer songs via the net. They sounded good. Yet I arrived expecting nostalgia, nothing more.

I made it to the venue, met up with beloved old friendds. During the opening act, I spied an aged but familiar face in the crowd. I elbowed my friend "TV Smith's just over there" I said. "Bullshit" he said.

Sometime later, TV took the stage. "I can't believe I'm standing only a few metres from TV Smith" said my friend. I agreed, just a wee bit awe-struck.

TV played "Only One Flavour". I was impressed. TV played "Bored Teenagers" (if memory serves). I was happy. TV played "Not In My Name" I was dumbstruck. My jaw - literally - dropped.

TV Smith was the most important voice of the genre that changed my life. 30 years on, he was standing in front of me, playing with the passion and the spirit that had changed my life. In the space of a few short few minutes, TV Smith validated three decades of my life. To know he still believed, still strived, made real everything I had believed in.

An hour later, I was engaged in conversation with a legend, one of the most decent, genuine, sincere and downright nice people I have ever met. We met again few days later. The hero of my youth bought me a beer, gratefully accepted one from me.

I asked TV to autograph my arm in texta. The next day I had his signature permanently tattooed on my arm. Such is the impact of the man. Since his return to England, we have exchanged email and he has proven himself a thoroughly decent and genuine person - something our society is arguably lacking.

Somehow, inexplicably, I knew that night that hearing, seeing and experiencing TV Smith had changed my life. Six months later I have taken up playing guitar and making music again after giving it away many years ago, and I am doing things musically I never could have done before. That was directly inspired by seeing TV, seeing what one man could do with a few chords and a heart full of passion. I have a new job, a new life and I am beginning a mind-altering relationship with the woman I had previously only dreamed of.

All those changes are my own doing, but all of them resulted from my encounter with TV Smith.

Tim Downes/TJ Sundown - you have chosen an exceptional role model (if that be the right term - choose a better one if you wish). I wish you all the very best. I wish you all that you know is possible.

I wish you your dreams.

Willi
